 | Preliminary West Oakland Air Testing Results - JOIN THE COMMUNITY MONITOR TEAM!
The Global Community Monitor (GCM), Students of McCylmond’s High School and the Rose Foundation have been conducting an investigation of pollution in West Oakland. GCM is organizing a Community Monitoring Action Team to conduct more air tests at homes and businesses in the area. We need your help to volunteer to be trained and participate in a variety of monitoring activities. |
 | Students find high lead levels in classroom
At first, the West Oakland class project on local air quality was a lot like other schoolwork - science and math and writing up stuff. Then it got personal. The classroom samples taken by the 20 Excel High School students came back from the lab showing high levels of lead - a dangerous metal known to cause a wide range of neurological and developmental problems, with small children most at risk. |

New Lead Tests by Students in West Oakland Raise Concerns: Youth Demand Community Air Testing Program
A second round of independent tests of metal fallout at EXCEL High School in the McClymonds Learning Complex and at a residential home in West Oakland showed an alarmingly high level of lead and other toxic metals. The metals found at both locations indicate that nearby industry may be routinely contaminating the area. Students are requesting additional community monitoring be supported by the County and Air District to determine the sources of lead and other toxins that have been detected in the school and surrounding neighborhood. |
 | Oil spill hits poor anglers hardest:
Two days after the Cosco Busan spilled 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel into San Francisco Bay, Khamnoi Vilaikam grabbed his fishing poles and drove to one of his favorite spots: a shoreline minutes away from his home in Richmond. |
 | What is Bunker Fuel?
The origin of the bunker fuel being considered is crude oil. When crude oil is subjected to refining, the lighter fractions (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc.) are removed by distillation. The heaviest materials in crude petroleum are not distilled - the boiling points are too high to be conveniently recovered. Finally, any contaminants in the crude will not be distilled from the crude and will also be in the resid. |
 | Add Your Voice to Ban Bunker Fuel in California!
On November 7, 2007, a cargo ship, the Cosco Busan, leaked 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel into the waters of San Francisco Bay when the ship hit the Bay Bridge mooring. This toxic spill has created both an immediate environmental crisis and one that will affect the future of our Bay. In West Oakland, ships like the Cosco Busan, spew toxic bunker fumes into the community and schools every day |
